Can’t we all relate to this guy’s complaints of being “the computer guy”?  Fortunately, after moving I haven’t had to fix any one’s computers in my ward.  I would like to keep it that way.  It’s not that I mind helping people.  It’s just that helping people with their computer is a like a virus.  If you do it once, it spreads very quickly and soon you have the whole neighborhood calling you for tech support.  Anyway, I found the link humorous and thought the rest of you would too.

Hmmmm… maybe I should have copied the contents of the article. Apparently the poster has exceeded his bandwidth limit. Oops.

From watching Josh be “the computer guy” with his family in the past, it’s not the viral effect that is the concern. It’s just the amount of patience required when somebody repeatedly uses the words, “The computer won’t let me…” Gaaahhhh…

“The computer won’t let me log in.”
“The computer won’t let me print.”
“The computer won’t let me get my stuff.” (Thanks, could you please be less specific?)
“The computer is acting all weird and I think I have a virus and it won’t let me login, get my stuff or print.”

Now when I call Josh for home technical support I always have to say, “The computer won’t let me…”

A sure-fire way to shed the “computer guy” label is to draw an analogy between your troubles and a virus. Well done.

Seriously, next time you’re asked to help just install linux on their machine. They’ll never want you to come back.

You must be a “computer guy” if when you hear virus, you think of a computer virus.

That’s a really good idea. In fact, I repeatedly suggest that. Of course, if I were to do them the favor of installing Linux, I would become the “Linux Computer Guy” and it would open a whole new can of worms.
